Balsa · Balsa · Ochroma pyramidale
Balsa is one of the fastest colonizers of light gaps, riverbanks, and landslide scars in the wet lowland forest. It lent its name and its hull to Thor Heyerdahl's Kon-Tiki — the same featherlight wood, prized for centuries locally for balsa rafts, fishing floats, and hooks, that later made it famous worldwide as the lightest commercial timber on Earth. Its large white flowers open at night and are pollinated by bats. The ripe seed pods split into a cloud of tan cotton fluff, once likened to a rabbit's foot, carrying seeds on the wind.
A very fast-growing pioneer in the Malvaceae family, Balsa is native from Mexico to Brazil and naturalized throughout the tropics, occurring on both Costa Rican slopes in dry to pluvial forest from sea level to 1,200m. It reaches 20–30m, with a straight cylindrical bole, smooth pale gray bark, and no buttress roots.
Bijarro · Horse balls tree · Tabernaemontana donnell-smithii
Bijarro doesn't sit neatly in any single successional guild: it self-seeds aggressively at forest edges and near canopy openings, yet also persists long-term as a modest, shade-tolerant presence in the understory. Its fruit grows in matched pairs of plump, oval pods — the source of its blunt common name, "horse balls." When ripe, each pod splits open to reveal seeds wrapped in a bright red aril, drawing many birds. Its leaves, bark, and fruit all bleed a thick white latex on any cut — a gutapercha-like sap chewed as a rustic gum substitute, and harvested by stingless bees to waterproof their nests.

Burío is a fast, light-wooded pioneer often left standing as informal shade over coffee, and its star-shaped fruit gave the genus its name, from the Greek for "sun fruit." Its stems and roots run thick with a mucilaginous sap that Central American sugarcane producers use to naturally clarify cane juice during artisanal panela and organic sugar production, replacing synthetic clarifying agents entirely. Its inner bark peels into strong, durable fiber, traditionally twisted into rope and cordage or beaten into amate-style paper.
A fast-growing pioneer in the Malvaceae family, Burío is native from Mexico to Costa Rica, occurring on both slopes in wet, very wet, and pluvial forest, secondary growth, and pasture edges from 50 to 1,700m. It reaches 4–25m, with reddish-haired young branches and broad, alternate leaves bearing conspicuous auricles at the base.
Capulín negro · Jamaican nettletree · Trema micrantha
Capulín negro's fruit draws more than 80 documented bird species in Costa Rica alone, among the highest counts recorded for any pioneer tree in the country. It's short-lived, rarely surviving past 30 years, but its quick canopy closure reshapes the microclimate beneath it, its heavy leaf litter rebuilds degraded soil, and its mycorrhizal roots help fix nutrients for itself and neighboring plants. It's often left standing as informal coffee shade, and in the Guianas its sap has traditionally been used to soothe eye irritation.
A fast-growing, short-lived pioneer in the Cannabaceae family — a relative of hemp, an unusual family for this guild — Capulín negro is native from Mexico to Argentina and the Caribbean, occurring on both Costa Rican slopes from sea level to 2,100m. It reaches 1–20(–25)m, with light gray-brown bark and asymmetrical, finely serrated leaves.
Colpachí · Snowy croton · Croton niveus
Colpachí's long, flexible branches and dense crown make it a classic Costa Rican windbreak tree, especially valued in Monteverde as a living hedge against the trade winds. Its sap once served as varnish, and its leaves as dish scrubbers, in old Central Valley households. Fruit and seed feed squirrels, parakeets, and doves, and its foliage hosts caterpillars of the butterfly Memphis artacaena. The name traces to Maya copal ("resin") and ché ("tree").
A fast-growing shrub or small tree in the Euphorbiaceae family — one of the guild's few non-legumes — Colpachí is native from Mexico to Colombia, Venezuela, and the Antilles, occurring in Costa Rica's Pacific slope, Central Valley, and Talamanca foothills between 300 and 1,800m. It ranges from a 2m shrub to a 20m tree, with thin brown bark and silvery, peltate-haired leaves.
Gallinazo · Brazilian firetree · Schizolobium parahyba
Gallinazo is very likely Costa Rica's fastest-growing native tree, gaining up to 3m of height a year, its open, airy crown turning brilliant yellow when it flowers leafless in December. Hummingbirds and bees work the flowers, wind scatters the winged seeds at dry season's end, and its long bare branches are a favorite nesting site for birds with hanging nests, including Rose-throated Becards. Its soft, light wood isn't structural, but suits interior construction, toys, matchsticks, and plywood core.

It reaches 20–30(–40)m at maturity, with a straight, self-pruning bole and large bipinnate leaves.
Guácimo · West Indian elm · Guazuma ulmifolia
Guácimo is a working tree wherever it grows: cut branches root easily enough to be planted as living fenceposts, and its leaves and protein-rich fruit are cut for cattle forage through the dry season. Its wood ash, high in alkaline carbonates, has traditionally gone into soap, and its bark has been used to help clarify raw sugar. It's also a host plant for silkworm caterpillars. On abandoned pasture it regenerates aggressively, sometimes forming near-pure stands called guacimales.

Guarumo · Trumpet tree · Cecropia obtusifolia
Guarumo is the sloth's primary food source and stage for one of nature's oldest partnerships: its hollow stem houses Azteca ant colonies that swarm out to bite intruders, prune back vines reaching the crown, and clean the leaves to keep them photosynthesizing. In return, the tree feeds them through Müllerian bodies — glycogen-rich nubs at the leaf base — which tanagers and warblers also raid directly. It's the quintessential gap pioneer: seeds lie dormant in shaded soil for years, germinating the moment sunlight reaches them, with saplings gaining 2–3m a year.
A fast-growing, short-lived pioneer in the Urticaceae family, Guarumo is native from Mexico to Ecuador, common in humid lowland forests to about 900m on both slopes of Costa Rica, especially the Atlantic lowlands. It reaches 15–20m, with a slender, hollow, leaf-scar-ringed trunk and large, deeply lobed leaves.
Guayaba · Guava · Psidium guajava
Guayaba's aggressive volunteering on pasture comes down to cattle: they eat the ripe fruit whole and pass the seeds unharmed in their manure, a self-perpetuating colonization cycle CATIE research has tracked in detail. Its fruit draws an extraordinary range of wildlife too — coatis, monkeys, squirrels, agoutis, deer, and birds and bats of many species. Its wood has a strong local reputation as the country's best cooking firewood, dense and long-burning, and its leaves carry a long history in traditional medicine.
A small tree in the Myrtaceae family — another outlier from this guild's Fabaceae and Euphorbiaceae company — Guayaba is native to tropical America and now naturalized worldwide, occurring from sea level to 2,000m. It reaches 3–10m, with smooth grayish bark that exfoliates in thin plates, opposite aromatic leaves, and white, fragrant flowers.
Güitite · Wild tobacco tree · Acnistus arborescens
Güitite may be Central America's single best bird tree — a single fruiting individual can draw more than 50 bird species to its abundant orange berries, with no toxicity concerns for wildlife. Its thick, corky, yellowish bark, deeply grooved and spongy, has long been prized by campesinos as a natural mount for epiphytic orchids, which cling to it without harming the tree — creating an informal trade in Güitite branches sold specifically as orchid supports. Its cream-colored, aromatic flowers, strung along the branches by the thousand, draw hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.
A fast-growing small tree in the Solanaceae — the tomato family, an outlier among this guild's mostly Fabaceae and Euphorbiaceae company — Güitite is native from Mexico to Brazil, common in secondary growth, coffee plantations, and disturbed ground across Costa Rica's mid-elevations. It reaches 6–12m, with a low, asymmetrical trunk often branching near the base and an irregular, spreading crown.
Hule · Panama rubber tree · Castilla elastica
Hule's wide plank buttresses stabilize it in soft, often waterlogged lowland soils, and its fruit feeds bats, monkeys, and birds. Its thick white latex was the original rubber of the Americas, cooked with sap from the moonflower vine Ipomoea alba — a chemical trick documented at Olmec sites more than 3,000 years before Goodyear's discovery. Unlike the Hevea rubber tree of the Amazon, Hule's latex vessels aren't interconnected, so extracting it meant stripping bark or felling the tree outright — a destructive harvest that, centuries later, fueled one of the rubber boom's most brutal labor regimes.
A fast-growing, semi-deciduous tree in the Moraceae family, Hule is native from Mexico into northern South America, occurring in Costa Rica's warm, humid lowlands on both slopes. It reaches 20–30m at maturity (exceptionally to 60m), with a straight trunk up to 90cm across and long, softly hairy leaves.
Indio desnudo · Gumbo limbo · Bursera simaruba
Indio desnudo's copper-red, papery bark peels constantly, exposing bright green bark beneath — tissue that holds chloroplasts and keeps photosynthesizing straight through the dry season after the tree drops its leaves, staying productive when its neighbors go dormant. It roots so readily from large cut stakes that campesinos plant them directly as living fenceposts, and its aromatic resin anchors two different economies: bees collect it for propolis, while people traditionally boil it down as a natural glue for mending glass, porcelain, and ceramics.
A resinous, semi-deciduous tree in the Burseraceae family, Indio desnudo is native from Florida and Mexico through Central America into Venezuela and Brazil, occurring on both Costa Rican slopes from dry to very humid climates. It reaches 20–30m, with a smooth, undulating, coppery trunk and a wide, open, irregular crown.
Papaturro · Inland seagrape · Coccoloba caracasana
A Pacific-slope dry-forest specialist, Papaturro's leaves are large enough to cover a serving platter, and its grape-like fruit clusters — a nod to its coastal cousin, the sea grape — are sweet enough to eat fresh. Guanacaste's dry-forest restoration programs value it as a nurse tree: it colonizes degraded pasture readily, tolerates poor soil, and draws seed-dispersing birds that reseed everything around it. Its trunk forks low into several stems, giving a wide, compact crown, and its rough, dark bark belies healthy growth. Cattle can safely browse it.
A small to medium tree in the Polygonaceae — the buckwheat family, a relative of the true sea grape — Papaturro is native from Mexico to Venezuela, occurring in Costa Rica mainly along the Pacific coast in deciduous forest, riverbanks, and pasture to about 500m. It reaches 12–20m, with broad, nearly round leaves and small, fragrant greenish flowers in spikes.
Targuá · Dragon's blood tree · Croton draco
Cut Targuá's bark and it bleeds — a thick red latex so convincingly blood-like that Costa Ricans call it llorasangre, "weeps blood." A fresh wound on the trunk can look like a raw gash on an animal's flank. It's a classic edge-and-roadside pioneer, colonizing pastures, coffee margins, riverbanks, and abandoned charrales. Modern pharmacological studies have taken an interest in the latex's compounds, and traditional healers across Mesoamerica have long used it as a liquid bandage for wounds.
A fast-growing pioneer in the Euphorbiaceae family, Targuá is native from Mexico to Colombia, occurring on both Costa Rican slopes from 100 to 1,700m. It's a relatively small tree, rarely exceeding 20m, with a thin trunk, an umbrella-like spreading crown, and heart-based, pointed leaves — dark green above, grayish and finely haired below.
Tubú · Tree Daisy · Montanoa guatemalensis
Tubú is a highland windbreak specialist — its documented range sits at 800–2,000m in Monteverde's cloud forest and the Central Valley. Where it thrives, it flowers spectacularly: December brings a flush of white, daisy-like blooms dense enough to whiten whole hillsides along the Monteverde road, drawing bees prized by local beekeepers. It grows fast enough to form near-pure stands on bare, rocky, degraded ground, and its corky, fissured bark hosts epiphytes readily. Tubú doesn't replace itself over time — older stands cede ground to other colonizers. Cattle browse the leaves, and the wood serves for fenceposts.

Vainillo / Sardinillo · Yellow bells · Tecoma stans
Vainillo is a true edge-and-disturbance pioneer, colonizing riverbanks, swampy ground, pastures, roadsides, and secondary forest. It's also one of the few native plants that flowers nearly year-round, an outsized pollinator resource for its size when most species are dormant or between bloom cycles. Its yellow trumpet flowers, streaked red in the throat, draw a remarkably diverse bee community: stingless bees, orchid bees, carpenter bees, and even nectar robbers that pierce the flower's base to bypass pollination. It carries a long history of traditional medicinal use dating back to Aztec herbal texts.

Yos · Milkwood · Sapium glandulosum
Yos is identified at a glance by the paired glands at the tip of each leaf stalk and the abundant milky latex that runs from any cut. It's tough enough to colonize poor, sun-baked, droughty slopes where few other pioneers take hold, and its roots help stabilize streambanks and conserve soil on disturbed ground. Its seeds, exposed in bright arils when the fruit capsules split, draw large foraging flocks of Pale-vented Pigeons as well as white-faced monkeys.

NITROGEN-FIXING PIONEERS

Guaba is one of the most important genera in Central American agroforestry: planted as a shade tree across coffee and cacao plantations, where its roots host Rhizobium bacteria that pull nitrogen from the air and deposit it in the soil, its heavy leaf litter enriches surrounding ground year after year, and its canopy buffers the microclimate by as much as 5°C, reducing water stress on the crop below. Its edible pods make it the tree children reach for first, splitting them open at the seam to eat the sweet white pulp cotton by cotton.
A fast-growing, nitrogen-fixing genus in the Fabaceae family, Guaba encompasses 300 species of small-to-medium trees native throughout the Neotropics, reaching 10–20m at maturity with a broad spreading umbrella crown and long twisted pods filled with sweet cotton-like pulp.
Guachipelín · Yellow heart · Diphysa americana
Guachipelín’s ecological function centers on soil rehabilitation: as a legume it fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules, its roots stabilize slopes, and it colonizes degraded pastures and abandoned agricultural land aggressively enough to rank among Costa Rica's most useful pioneer reclamation species. Between November and February it drops its leaves and erupts in dense clusters of vibrant yellow pea-flowers that cover the canopy. Its heartwood is an extraordinary honey-yellow, dense and heavy as black locust, resistant to rot and termites.

Guajiniquil is a preferred shade tree in traditional shade-coffee systems from Chiapas through Veracruz to Costa Rica, capturing atmospheric carbon in its aboveground biomass, providing bird habitat, and dropping leaves rich enough in nitrogen to fertilize the crop below. Its edible pods, split open at the seam, reveal the sweet cotton-white pulp that gives the genus its English name — the mouth-fitting sweetness that has fed children across Mesoamerica for generations.

The most versatile agroforestry tree in the Neotropics. farmers propagate madero negro by cutting live stakes and pushing them into the ground, where they root within weeks, making it the most common live-fence species across the tropics. Its nitrogen-rich leaves serve as green manure, and its deep roots stabilize eroding slopes on degraded land. Beyond fixing soil, it feeds livestock as cut-and-carry fodder, shades coffee and cacao, produces honey for bees, and supplies firewood.

Poró is the workhorse shade tree of Costa Rican coffee agroforestry — planted in association with cacao, coppiced or pollarded annually to control its shade, and returning up to 200 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare through its prunings. Its ease of propagation from live stakes, tolerance of repeated pruning, and high-protein foliage have made it a favorite of small farmers across Central America for a century.

Thriving in waterlogged ground, Poró de humedal’s true habitat is the freshwater swamp forest and the poorly drained bottomland. Beyond its riparian anchor role, it fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules, propagates readily from live stakes, provides shade for cacao and pepper vines in agroforestry systems, and drops nitrogen-rich leaf litter into the wet ground below.
A fast-growing nitrogen-fixing legume in the Fabaceae family, Poró de humedal is the most geographically widespread species in the genus Erythrina — the only one native to both the Old World and New World tropics, distributed from India through Southeast Asia and from Central America through the Amazon basin. It reaches 15–25m at maturity with a broad rounded crown, deciduous trifoliate leaves, and long clusters of deep orange-red coral-like flowers.

Its ecological range extends into a specialized practice called Inga alley cropping: rows of Guaba machete are planted along contour lines, then pruned annually to release a thick nitrogen-rich mulch that suppresses weeds and restores phosphorus — allowing tropical farmers to grow maize on the same plot for decades. Its sweet pulp, split from the pod at the seam, has fed children across the Amazon for so many centuries that the Tupi word ingá — the tree's Latin genus — is simply the indigenous name for the fruit.

Its Spanish name traces back to Guachapelí Hill in coastal Ecuador, where indigenous people once harvested its wood for canoes.

Aceituno's genus name comes from a French Guianese indigenous word for the tree; its species name, from Latin amarus, "bitter," nods to the intense bitterness running through its bark, leaves, and roots — chemistry that's made it a workhorse of traditional medicine across the Americas, and the same quassinoid compounds that leave its lightweight wood naturally termite-resistant. As a dioecious species, producing only male or only female flowers per tree, its purple, oil-rich fruit draws a wide range of wildlife — cardinals, thrushes, caciques, tanagers, monkeys, bats, and leaf-cutter ants that carry off the seeds.

Botarrama's crown turns strikingly showy each April and May, when slender terminal panicles erupt in flowers with five orange-red calyx lobes. It colonizes abandoned pasture readily on its own, and its steady leaf litter breaks down into soil rich in nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus. Its lumber goes into interior construction, boxes, matchsticks, and pulp for paper, though the genus is somewhat prone to rot and biological attack — it ranks among the most abundant native trees of Costa Rica's Zona Norte.

Cebo · White chancho · Vochysia guatemalensis
Cebo's real strength shows on the ground other pioneers reject — it thrives in acidic, clayey soils heavy with iron and aluminum, the kind of degraded, hard-to-restore site that stalls slower species. Its glossy leaves cluster in whorls of three or four at each node, and its aromatic yellow flowers draw bees heavily enough to be prized by local beekeepers. Winged seeds ride the wind to colonize open, disturbed ground on their own, and farmers have long planted cut stems directly as living fence posts. In trials, Cebo has out-performed other reforestation species tested alongside it in both timber volume and carbon sequestered per hectare.

Chaperno · Chaperno · Lonchocarpus oliganthus
Chaperno belongs to one of Costa Rica's most diverse tree genera — roughly 30 Lonchocarpus species grow in the country, most sharing a strong bean-like odor in their bark and leaves that can make field identification tricky even for experienced botanists. This particular species serves as a host plant for the Morpho helenor butterfly. Its compound legume leaves carry five to seven leaflets, elliptic to obovate with a distinctive tapering, tail-like tip, and it's a common presence in humid forest across Costa Rica's Atlantic and north-central regions, from lowland forest up into premontane elevations.

Chaperno blanco · Seven-leaf tree · Lonchocarpus heptaphyllus
Chaperno blanco stands out within its own sprawling genus by its white flowers and the distinctive white underside of its leaflets, features taxonomists use to separate it from its purple- and lilac-flowered cousins. Like much of the genus, its young twigs are hollow and lenticelled, and its foliage is a favorite host for gall-forming insects in the genus Euphalerus, each species of Lonchocarpus attracting its own distinct gall shape. Its flowers open only at night, and its pods burst open to release kapok, a buoyant, water-resistant fiber once essential for life vests and pillow stuffing before synthetics replaced it. Massive plank buttresses anchor its trunk, and among Neotropical trees it's one of the true giants, verified past 60m — with some of the oldest documented specimens estimated at two to three centuries old.

Cenízaro earns its nickname "Rain Tree" two ways: its leaflets fold shut each night and ahead of storms, and the cicadas colonizing its canopy drip a fine mist of honeydew, steady enough to feel like rain. Its spectacular crown spreads into a flat-topped umbrella up to 60 meters wide, with branches running up to 30m long — three times the height of the trunk — and a single mature tree can shelter an entire herd of cattle. Its curled, sweet-pulped pods are relished by cattle and wildlife alike. In dry-season Guanacaste, its canopy erupts into pink, thread-like flowers drawing bees and birds by the hundreds.

It's related to the Brazil nut tree and is now legally protected in Costa Rica, where overharvesting has made it increasingly rare.

Sura's most distinctive feature is its peeling bark: thin, silky-smooth, and pale orange, it peels away exposing fresh bark beneath and giving the trunk an almost polished sheen. Its English name, "dragonwood," comes from the heartwood itself, dense and richly figured with dark brown and greenish veining running through paler sapwood. Wide, thin, plank-like buttresses fuse into the trunk about a meter up, anchoring the tree in the riverbanks and poorly drained bottomland it prefers. Its small cream to yellow-green flowers draw bees, and its two-winged samara seeds ride the wind away from the parent tree.

Paleosol Boundaries
Three distinct dark bands cut through this slope's ash layers, each one an old ground surface — a stretch of time when the volcano went quiet long enough for soil to actually form, humus building up the way it does anywhere plants and time are left alone. Then the mountain erupted again, buried that surface under a fresh layer of tephra, and the process started over. Three paleosols means three such pauses, three intervals where this hillside was, briefly, just hillside again before the next event sealed it. Regional tephrostratigraphy on Rincón de la Vieja's southwest flank has dated similar buried, organic-rich soils to as early as 3700 BCE (Aguilar & Alvarado, 2020).
Boulder Field
Water alone doesn't move rock like this. The angular, mixed-size boulders sitting deep in this profile are the signature of a lahar — a slurry of volcanic debris and water thick enough to carry blocks a meter or more across, moving downslope with the force and consistency people have compared to wet concrete. Unlike a river, which sorts what it carries by size and rounds it as it goes, a lahar deposits everything at once, in whatever shape it was in when the flow lost momentum: fine ash next to boulders, angular edges left mostly intact. That poor sorting and lack of rounding is exactly what marks this as lahar deposit rather than ordinary stream gravel — a record of a single violent event, not a slow accumulation.
Volcanic Provenance
Not all ash is the same ash. Rincón de la Vieja's eruptive record spans a real range of violence — Plinian and sub-Plinian blasts that threw material high enough to fall as fine, sorted layers, alongside smaller Vulcanian and Strombolian events that left coarser, messier deposits close to home. Each eruptive style leaves its own signature in the ground: grain size, sorting, the presence or absence of pumice, how far a given layer traveled before it settled. Reading those differences is how a single tephra band gets tied back to a specific eruption rather than just filed as "old ash." Radiometric dating of the volcano's tephrostratigraphy over the last 6,000 years has begun assembling that record in detail (Aguilar & Alvarado, 2020).

Café is the shrub that shapes the whole silvopasture-and-shade conversation on a property like this — it's the reason Poró, Guaba, and Madero negro earn a place in any planting plan in the first place, since arabica coffee evolved as an understory species and produces its best cup quality when grown beneath a broken canopy rather than in full sun. Lahar Package — A deep deposit of volcanic debris and water-borne material, laid down during a past lahar (volcanic mudflow) event. It sits roughly 5m below the surface and extends down to about 19–20m, thickening substantially — to nearly 14.5m — beneath the flat terrace compared to the hillside above, where it's shielded by the change in topography.
Substrate — The ground surface itself, shaped by the catena effect: the gradual downslope movement of soil and fine sediment that leaves upper slopes thinner and coarser while accumulating deeper, richer soil at the base and on flatter ground. Here it marks the paleo-topography preserved within the tephra2 layer, the buried surface everything above is built on.
